We have recognized the distinction between 'home' and 'office' as a useful metaphor to address the 'slicing' of an individual's identity into specific roles.

Our concern is the role of ICTs in the constitution of roles in organisations in such a way that the tension between these roles and the 'persons' is kept in dynamic stability.

Can ICTs be designed in such a way that they support the development towards greater autonomy and responsibility?

ICTs may not be enough to provide that support. What else may be required? e.g. provision of appropriate information, support in the development of skills, etc.

For these purposes we propose:

  1. To study the relation between ICTs and work at the level of the individual. For instance the impact and requirements of ICTs for Global executives, workers in call centres, workers in manufacturing (production line), and knowledge workers in dot.coms (at home and in the office).
  2. The flexible design of ICTs, which can allow the user to influence and individualise functionality; make use of all relevant and available information; and enhance the individual's role.
