Objectives: To produce a practical tool that will help make the issue of values more visible to ICT developers to improve product design, and to explore the impact of ICTs on social systems.

We recognise that different communities have different value sets that need to be accommodated. As such any tool will need to assist with understanding the "3 body problem" of two participants and an observer and understand the concept of desirability in the context of the difference between value sets.

A seed model (below) has been developed to help move forward through three distinct phases of work:

Phase 1: The Model

  • We need to enrich the model, which we can do by learning from other theories. (e.g. from psychology) and also from our own thinking.
  • We also need to distinguish core/fundamental values from the rest. These core values may also emerge from the next step
  • The observation of choices in action (behavioural norms) may help us to identify relevant values. We hypothesise that communication of values through choice (CVCs) is how society, organisations and individuals manifest value in these systems and that symbols (signs, behaviours etc) flag these values to others. Looking for such CVCs is proposed and a practice methodology may need to be developed in parallel with the model.

Phase 2: Test by Example

  • Proving stage: We propose to run a first workshop to explore the application of the world through 'friendly' problem owners who would bring case studies to the workshop. At the workshop the model as developed would be flexed to see how it describes the situations provided.

Phase 3: Wider Test

  • Testing: The next stage would be to write something/hold another workshop. Test in as rigorous a way as can be managed.
